The Magic Division Leader’s Contract Marriage chapter 2

Chapter 2

The audit was quickly completed and things went back to normal. As usual, Ray was going to meetings, consulting with royalty and corps members, and examining new magic.

And he had forgotten all about it. The blind date.

“How would you like to go about tomorrow, Master Ray?”

Connie spoke to me after I got home for the weekend, but I had no idea what he was talking about. Connie continued with a dumbfounded look on his face.

“It’s about the blind date, tomorrow. Your grandmother’s fortune telling.”

I remembered. I responded that I would make an arrangement. At the time, I was preoccupied with the audit. Now it’s become a hassle.

“…I’ll be there in a moment. Just pick clothes out as you see fit.”

“Yes, sir.”

Just like with previous blind dates, I just have to talk to them as I see fit and then cut them off. Afterwards I can say that we don’t seem to be a match.

The next day, Ray was being groomed by Miranda, the housekeeper. Her hair was carefully stroked and she was dressed in a beautiful aristocratic dress.

“Boy, you’re the best in the country when you’re groomed. Normally, you’re worth 20% less in those black robes that remind me of the Grim Reaper, what a waste.”

Miranda has known Ray since he was a child. Like his family, she too has long been worried about Ray’s marriage.

“Stop treating me like a little boy. Besides, I want to turn down the marriage proposal.”

“What do you mean? This house is so big with so little people in it, it’s lonely. You have to bring her to me as soon as possible so that I can take care of her while I’m still healthy.

“Then you better stay healthy forever. I’ll mix you a rejuvenation potion.”

Then Ray laughed as Miranda slapped him on the back.

Ray’s parents had instructed him to go to a coffee shop along the main street of the royal capital where they were meeting at 2pm. Ray soon arrived at the designated coffee shop at 2:00 p.m. exactly, identified himself to the waiter, and was immediately shown to his seat.

A woman was already seated at the table, reading a thick book.

“Hello,” he said, “and I apologize for the delay. My name is Ray Miller.”

When Ray said his name, the woman looked up from her book and made eye contact with Ray. He felt like they’ve met somewhere before, but he couldn’t really remember.

“Oh, it’s the division leader. Thank you for your audit the other day.”

I recognized the voice.

It’s Auditor Taylor!

Unlike the day of the audit, her hair is tied up and decorated with flowers today. She was also wearing black pants when she was auditing, but today she’s wearing a pale green dress and I also realized that she didn’t have her glasses on today.

“…Thank you for the other day, Auditor Taylor. May I sit down?”

“Of course you can.”

Bridget urged him to sit down across from her.

“Well, I see that my meeting today is with you, the division leader. However, I must apologize as I didn’t have time to look at the family chart and portrait, so I didn’t know who I was dealing with.”

“…I’m embarrassed to say that I was the exact same way as well, Ms. Taylor.”

Ray sat down across from her and ordered a drink when the waiter arrived. Bridget ordered as well.

If you looked closely, you could tell that she was wearing light makeup today, and unlike the other day, she looked like an ordinary lady. Did my parent’s letter say that she was a daughter of a marquis?

“I have not taken a look at the family chart, so I do not know much about you, Ms. Taylor. Shall we briefly introduce ourselves to each other?”

“Sure. Then I’ll start.”

Clearing her throat, Bridget straightened up.

“My name is Bridget Taylor, I’m 26 years old and from a marquis family. I’m currently the head of Team 1 of the Audit Office.”

The way she looked straight into Ray’s eyes and introduced herself was the same manner in which she introduced herself during the audit.

“Also…my hobby is reading and my specialty is finding irregularities in accounting books. That’s all. Next, Division Leader, please.”

It was amusing to see her mention such an unladylike skill. Looking at the book in her hand, Ray had to look twice to make sure he read the title correctly which was, “Women and Slush Funds.”

“…I’m Ray Miller, 29 years old. I am the leader of the Magic Division. My hobbies are…”

Ray pondered. Lately, he’s been going back and forth between work and home, and when he gets home, he just sleeps. He spends his days off in bed and occasionally tends to his garden. Realizing how boring he was, Ray felt empty.

“My hobby is tinkering in the garden occasionally. My speciality is transference magic.”

“I’ve heard that transference magic is quite advanced and can only be done by a good magician. You are indeed one of the best magicians in the country.”

Ray received a direct complement which made him itchy. Then they talked a bit about the recent audit, and Ray asked something he was curious about.

“With all due respect, has Auditor Taylor ever had any relationships in the past? Or have you purely been busy with work?”

A single woman at the age of 26 is honestly rare. Especially coming from a marquis family, it wouldn’t be surprising if she had a fiancé since she was a child. I wondered why she came to today’s blind date.

“No, I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve been engaged twice, and both times I broke it off. To be honest, I was strongly urged by my house to come today, but I don’t want to marry you, so the divisional leader will have to decline me appropriately.”

“What? I can’t refuse.”

Bridget chuckled.

“You too must have been reluctant to come by the way you look. You haven’t even seen the family chart, just like me. But I can’t refuse. It is extremely unnatural for me to refuse a man as handsome as the Division Leader.”

In the meantime, Ray was puzzled by Bridget’s assessment of his appearance. It would certainly be easier for Bridget to excuse herself if she refused Ray.

“Well, if you don’t mind me asking, how did you end up breaking up your previous engagements?”

“It’s no big deal really. Both were fiancés chosen by my parents and the first was a childhood friend of the marquis’ son. I helped his parents run their estate for a bit, and also helped out with their financial difficulties.”

Bridget took a sip of tea and moistened her lips.

“Their family’s financial management did improve, but my fiancé said I wasn’t pretty enough, so we broke up.”

“…I’m sorry to hear that.”

“It’s alright. The second one was a knight. A short time after the first breakup, I became an auditor in the Royal Capital, and he didn’t like the fact that my salary was much better, so he broke it off.”

It is true that there is a huge difference in salary between a provincial knight and an auditor of the royal capital.

“But that’s not your fault either. So you still don’t want to get married?”

“I love my job and I can earn my living by doing this job. However, the pressure from home is a bother, so I think that once I get married, divorce and get proof that I’m not married, those at home will quiet down.”

The feeling was understandable to Ray. Once you have a track record of being married, you can get your family to stay quiet for a bit.

“Do you have a lot of work to do as a division leader? Why don’t you get married?”

“I mean, well, there was never a good fit…”

“It’s a hard world for a single person to live in, and I hate it.”

“I agree…”

Bridget and Ray both drank tea and leaned back in their chairs with a breeze.

“By the way, what exactly is that book in Ms.Taylor’s hand?”

“Oh, it’s interesting. It’s like a collection of slush funds written by a local auditor…”

Then they talked about books and each other’s work.

The first group in which Bridget belongs is essentially like a lone wolf, and regular audits are performed by groups 2 to 6. The first group is mainly responsible for unannounced audits and irregularities when there is a whistleblower or a report, but there are times when they support other groups, as they did the other day.

Then when Ray talked about the magic division, Bridget’s eyes lit up as she said she had never seen magic in person. Ray cast a spell on the spot and changed the taste of the tea she was drinking to the flavor of lobster.

Bridget laughed out loud that she had never tasted such bad tea before, so he quickly returned the original flavor.

They talked for a while, and the evening bell soon rang.

They were talking for quite a while

Bridget said she lived in a dormitory, and they both left the coffee shop and towards her home.
