On The Night When The Stars And Flowers Fall chapter 4

Tanabata Festival

In July, club activities were busy preparing for the Tanabata Festival.

One day, I was going to the club room as usual.

I heard a voice from the other side of the door.

I opened the door a bit.

When I opened the door a little, I found Hikari sitting on a chair with a red face.

“What the hell!?”

She was muttering to himself the whole time.

I was a little scared and hesitated to enter.

“Come on in.”

I knew she had noticed me.

I walked into the club room.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“The teacher won’t open the roof.”

“The roof?”

The rooftop had been banned for the time being after the suicide of a member of the astronomy club ten years ago.

The idea is to free it up.

But it seemed difficult. I jokingly said, “You never know who’s going to fall next.”

“Who’s going to fall?”

“Well, maybe Hikari will slip and fall.”

“I’m not that screwed up.”

We looked at each other and laughed together. “Anyway, after what happened, we have to do something.”

“I don’t think the teachers will let us go unless we do something about it.”

“They’ll only do it if 80% of the students agree.”

“Then we’ll go right away.”

“Where are we going?”

I had an idea.

I tugged on Hikari’s arm and went down the stairs.

“Wait, wait, wait.”

I didn’t stop.

I opened the door and walked in to find a microphone.

“What, the broadcasting room?”

“I’m a member of the broadcasting committee and I have to greet people on their way home. You can’t do it, so if you advertise there, they’ll get to know about the situation.”

Then it was time for the broadcast. I couldn’t stop sweating just because there was someone next to me.

And it was my favorite person.

I was so nervous that my hands were shaking. With my trembling hands

I pressed the power button on the microphone.

A broadcast echoed through the school.

“Good evening, everyone. It’s time for you to go home. But before you go, one of the students would like to speak with you.”

I stepped away from the microphone.

Hikari’s hands were shaking with nervousness. I took Hikari’s hand in mine and whispered, “Don’t worry. It’s okay. It’ll definitely reach everyone.”

I muttered so.

I don’t know if it reached her or not, but

Hikari took a deep breath and began.

“I’m Hikari Ito, the head of the astronomy club. I want you to see the wonderful night sky from the rooftop. But in order to open up the rooftop, I need 80% of the people’s approval. Please sign the petition.”

I turned off the microphone and we took a deep breath.

This is where it starts.

The teachers thought the rooftop was a dangerous place, so they probably wouldn’t open the door.

Still, we had to fight somehow.

Immediately, the teachers opened the door and came in.

“What’s this all about?”

“We will definitely collect 80% of the signatures and release them.”

The teachers left complaining.

“We’ll go early in the morning to get the signatures.”

“All right.”

Tomorrow I have to go to school early.

I was a little nervous about getting up that early.

When I got home, I saw something glowing in the living room.

As I approached, I saw that it was a landline phone.

I picked up the phone and heard the answering machine.

“Kouki. Long time no see. I’m almost done with work, so I’ll be back next week. Please wait for me.”

It was from my mother. Not that I was waiting for her.

I was not waiting for her, but I was looking forward to it because every time she came home, we had a fancy dinner.

I wondered what the next week would bring.

I went to my room with faint anticipation.

I decided to go to bed an hour earlier than usual.

The next day, I woke up and looked at the clock.

I was half an hour late for my appointment.

There was only one possible reason.

I slept twice. I had fallen asleep twice, and my usual habit had kicked in.

I hurriedly changed my clothes and headed for school.

When I got there, it was the same as usual.

Hikari was waiting for me at the entrance.

“You’re late!”

“I’m sorry, I fell asleep twice.”

“I got a hundred already.”

“You’re early.”

“They’re surprisingly eager to get up to the roof.”

“Well, then it’s not gonna take long, is it?”

I stood in the doorway with a piece of paper to sign.

I looked next to me and saw Hikari talking with people I didn’t know.

My school consists of five classes, each class has almost 40 students. I don’t know which class Hikari is in, but I’m sure there are many students I don’t know yet.

“Hey, Ito. Ito.”

“It’s the teacher. I have to go.”

Hikari was being called by the teacher. I had never seen her before.

I had never seen her before.

I had been involved in various classes, and I thought I had been involved with all the first-year teachers, but I had never seen that person before.

The conversation between Hikari and the teacher ended and she came back.

“Who is that teacher?”

“An office teacher.”

An office teacher. That’s why I’ve never seen her before.

“What was the conversation about?”

“I haven’t done my assignment.”

“You have to do it.”

Hikari laughed and faked it.

About 40% gathered in one day today.

It’s a little more. It will be done by tomorrow.

We split up and headed to our respective classrooms.

At the end of morning homeroom, Kengo asked, “What did you do this morning?”

“Signing a petition.”

“For what?”

“To open up the roof.”

“Sounds like a lot of fun.”

Kengo was still biting at the idea.

“I’ll be there tomorrow. I’ll help you.”

“The more the merrier. Okay, let’s do it together.”

“Okay. I’ll call you in the morning and wake you up.”

After all, Kengo knew everything.

He knows that I’m weak in the morning.

He woke me up on the day of the entrance ceremony.

The next morning, I heard the phone ringing.

Thanks to that, I was able to wake up.

Kengo was already in front of the house. I hurried to change my clothes.

I went outside. Kengo had morning practice, so I didn’t get to go with him often.

But luckily today was Wednesday.

I guess Kengo came because he doesn’t have club activities on Wednesdays.

We talked about a lot of trivial things.

But for some reason, it was still fun.

It didn’t take me long to get to the school, and I headed for the door.

Hikari and another cute girl was standing there.

“Hikari, who is this person?”

“This is my friend Amane.”

“Good morning, everyone. I’m Amane Suzuki, a second year student. When Hi-chan told me about this signing, I thought it sounded like a lot of fun. So I joined. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

I didn’t know there was someone exactly like Kengo.

“Hikari, why are you related to a second year?”

“We’ve been friends for a long time.

“I see.”

“Okay! Let’s get started.”

I looked next to him.

Kengo’s face was red.

“Why is your face red? Do you have a fever?”

“No, no, no. …… its ……”

Kengo pulled me by the arm and led me to a corner.

“What’s wrong?”

“Amane. Isn’t she so cute?”

“I don’t know. I think I like Hikari better.”

“I’m going to appeal to her and tell her, I’m going to the Tanabata Festival with you.”

Kengo is always like this. Whenever Kengo finds a goal, he goes for it.

Kengo gets depressed more than anyone else.

He is a very simple person.

“It’s not that easy.”

“No, I’ve made up my mind, I’ve made up my mind…”

Kengo ran over to Amane.

He ran over to Amane and introduced himself.

“I’m Kengo. Nice to meet you. What’s your favorite thing?”

“Hmm? Cats, I guess. I have a black cat named Mika.”

Amane showed us a picture on her phone.

“It’s so cute!”

Amane and Kengo were already getting to know each other.

I had a little respect for Kengo.

When the four of us got together, we went to 80% in no time.

We got permission from the principal.

Now all we had to do was to make the Tanabata Festival a success.

The planning for the Tanabata Festival store was going on.

Tomorrow was the big day.

When I went to school as usual, Kengo came up to me looking happy.

“What’s up?”

“I got a girlfriend.”

The word “incomprehensible” popped into my head.

It hadn’t even been a week since they met.

“Isn’t it too soon?”

“Love is an attack, you know. Don’t be afraid of failing. You just go for it.”

“That’s great.”

“You should invite her to the Tanabata Festival and tell her. It’s your birthday.”

Asking her to the Tanabata Festival. How can it be?

It’s already the day before. It would be too late to ask her now.

“You can do it.”

Kengo’s words cheered me up and I decided to ask her.

After school, I was preparing for the Tanabata Festival with Hikari.

“It’s finally tomorrow, isn’t it?”

Hikari said to me. This is a good chance.

“Who are you going to see it with?”

“I think I’m going alone.”

Alone. The word crossed my brain several times.

It’s now or never. My hands were covered in sweat and my heart was beating

My hands were sweaty and my heart was about to burst violently.

“Would you like to go to the Tanabata Festival with me?”

I was so happy that my heart felt like it was going to burst.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. No one else is going.”

“Thank you.”

Now that Kengo was going out, I wanted to have my first girlfriend.

Tomorrow is the real battle.

I couldn’t sleep this night.

The next day, I woke up even though my alarm hadn’t gone off.

The Tanabata Festival was still 12 hours away.

I felt my heart beating faster than usual.

I reached for the phone next to me and opened it.

I sleepily open the line.

There were three messages on it.

It was just Kengo, mom and Hikari.

If I were more cheerful and had more friends

If I were more cheerful and had more friends, I’m sure I’d have more than 100.

“Happy birthday, Kouki.”

“Hey, happy birthday. Keep it up.

“It’s our birthday. Happy birthday you and me.”

Each one of them is unique and easy to understand.

Hikari’s birthday is today, just like mine.

I wished her “Happy birthday me and you” and sat up.

I got up.

I was eating breakfast.

Just then, the phone rang.

The number was from ]mother.

“Hello? What can I do for you?”

“Happy birthday. I’m coming home tomorrow.”

“Is that all?”

“Yeah, it’s been three months. I can’t wait to see you.”

“Kouki is so cold. You’ve always been a rebel.”

“No, not at all. It’s normal.”

“Okay, bye.”

Wheneve mother comes home, dinner is always lavish.

What will she eat? That was all I could think about.

The clock struck nine in the morning.

There’s still time until the Tanabata Festival.

I can’t wait to go. I want to see Hikari. I was looking forward to it too much.

I felt that time was passing too slowly.

The final exam was coming up next week.

I decided to study for it.

My favorite subject is geology.

At my school, we are supposed to choose either chemistry or geology as soon as we enter the school.

I opened my geology textbook.

The scope of the exam this time was the solar system.

There was also a section on stars, so I decided to read that.

Time flew by as I studied about the stars and the sun.

Around 11 o’clock, I decided to eat at the shopping street for lunch.

I put my backpack on my back and started pedaling my bike.

When I looked up at the sky, the blue sky was all around me.

I felt like I was going to see the best stars I had ever seen today.

As I entered the shopping arcade, I saw bamboo leaves hanging from the ceiling.

Among the strips of paper were “I want to be a Precure!” “I want to be a firefighter!” and so on.

Why do we write our future dreams on strips of paper?

That’s the research question of my life.

There is Tanabata every year.

I’m sure they’ll say I don’t have any dreams if I say something like that.

I saw a noodle shop, so I decided to go in there.

“Welcome. How many of you are here?”

The cheerful manager came over.

“One person.”

“I see. Please take a seat over here.”

He led me to a seat and I opened the menu. There was a sign that read “Half price for birthday customers.”

Half price?

“Excuse me. It’s my birthday today. One birthday ramen.”

“Isn’t it great that today is your birthday?

The owner of the restaurant was so friendly.

I couldn’t keep up with him.

“Are you going to the Tanabata Festival today?”

“I’m going with her.”

“Her? I used to have a girlfriend too.”

I had a girlfriend too…” For the next 20 minutes, I was told about the story of the store manager.

I read my textbook while listening to the story.

“Happy birthday to you. It’s ready. Birthday ramen.””

It contains an egg, nori (dried seaweed), five slices of chashu pork, menma, green onion.

It was almost twice the volume of regular ramen.

Half price is too cheap.

I drank the soup first.

The soup was a little thick, but it was delicious.

I couldn’t stop after drinking one sip, and before I knew it, the soup was half.

Of course, the noodles were also delicious.

I was so happy during that time.

All I could think about was the fact that it was my birthday.

“Thanks for the food. It was really delicious.”

“Right? Come back next year for birthday ramen.”

“Okay. Can I ask you one more question?”

“I’m going to confess my love today. Do you have any tips?”

The manager pondered a bit and said, “Hmm. I don’t have any tips. There is no trick. If you give them a gift or something, they’ll focus on that, so just go with words. ‘I love you.’ If you just say that, I’m sure your feelings will reach them.”

Hearing the manager’s words, I felt lighter.

“Thank you very much. I’ll come back next year with my girlfriend.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

It was still past one o’clock and far from the appointed time of four.

What should I do? As I was thinking about it, I saw a fortune teller.

That’s unusual. I decided to enter the suspicious fortune-telling shop.

I decided to try it.

“Excuse me.”

“Come in. It’s 500 yen a time.

I paid and asked if my confession would be successful today.

The fortune teller kept looking at the crystal ball.

“I see” she said suddenly.

She talked about the result of fortune-telling.

“When the stars and flowers are in full bloom, your wish will come true. Your lucky item is a red stone. By holding the red stone, your wish will come true.”

A red stone? I had no idea what she was talking about.

“Is today going to work out after all?”

“Let time take its course.”

“What do you mean?”

“I can’t tell you any more than that.

I don’t get it. I don’t understand. 500 yen is too much for this.

So I went outside and decided to go to the Tanabata Festival.

It was still too early. I’m sure the Hikari hasn’t even come on yet.

When I arrived at the school, I heard a voice saying, “Hey!”

I looked over and saw Hikari there.

“Isn’t it too early?”

“You’re too early too.”

We laughed at each other. “I’ve decided what I’m going to write on a strip of paper today. Try to guess?”

What Hikari will write. Most of the high school students will write something like, I want a girlfriend. I want a boyfriend. I want to be a real person.

I have the impression that they are all about that. Also, one person wrote, I want money.

“You want a boyfriend?”

“Do you want money?

“Then what is it?

“I’m not gonna tell you. Not until you guess. What do you want?”

“I’ll go with …….”

I thought about it all last night, but I couldn’t come up with anything.

Even if I had the money, I wouldn’t spend it.

I’m good at studying.

She is …….

“It’s a secret.

“It’s a little early, but let’s go to the food stall.”

We headed for the stall.

Until last year, there were only three food stalls: cotton candy, potatoes and super ball scooping.

So we talked about it and proposed a new one.

One of them was the target shooting.

When we were thinking about the target of the shooting, a conversation came to my mind.

“Even stars have a life span.”

“Is that so? Isn’t life only for living things?”

“That blue star is a newborn baby. That blue star is a newborn baby and that red star is an old one.”

“So do stars really die?”

“Yes, they die. They say that stars live for 2 million years.”

And the star shooter was born.

There are three targets: a red star, a blue star, and a yellow star.

The blue star is the smallest and has 10 points.

The yellow star is normal size and worth 5 points.

The red star is the biggest and has 2 points.

If you get more than 7 points in 3 attempts, you get a prize.

If you get 12 points, you get a luxury prize.

If you get 15 points, you get two prizes.

We planned such a stall.

There were many people lined up at the stall.

“Let’s go shooting.”

“I like the stars. I don’t want to shoot.”

I didn’t expect such an answer, but my mind couldn’t keep up.

“I see. Well, that’s okay. Let’s just go see them.”

As I got closer and closer.

“Ahhh. I was so close.”

“Do not mind it.”

The voice sounded familiar.

“Oh, Kouki. You came with her, didn’t you?”

“She’s not my girlfriend.”

“Two people coming together means she is.”

“I don’t even know what that means. How about you, Kengo, with your girlfriend?”

“It’s so much fun.”

I looked behind me and saw Hikari and Amane talking happily.

“It’s really fun. Why don’t the four of us work together now?”

After talking with Hikari, the four of us decided to go out together.

Then we played superball scooping, bought fries and ate them, and did various other things at the food stalls.

Then we headed for the main event, the grandstands.

“First we have to write on the strips of paper.”

Kengo went first to write.

What did he write? I was curious, but he didn’t tell me.

After Amane finished, it was my turn to write.

There was only one thing to write.

My pen began to move on its own.

After I finished writing, Hikari wrote.

He went to decorate the bamboo branches with strips of paper.

“The fireworks are about to start. Please count down.”

The announcement sounded, and finally the fireworks started.

We all started counting down from ten.

“Three, two, one.”

At the same time, star-shaped fireworks bloomed in the night sky.

It is said that if you put your wish on the fireworks, it will reach Hikoboshi and Orihime.

So everyone closed their eyes and made their wishes without looking at the fireworks.

I also made a wish in my head: “I hope my confession will be successful and I can go out with Hikari.”

When I opened my eyes, I felt as if the fireworks were telling me, “Hurry up and tell her!”

When should I tell her? Where should I tell her?

I looked at Kengo and he looked at me and winked.

“I felt like he was saying, “Good luck.”

I looked back at the advice I had been given.

“Love is an attack. Don’t be afraid to fail.

Just attack.

“Just go with the flow of time.”

That’s right. Communicate your feelings to your partner in a straightforward manner.

Don’t be afraid to fail.

It’s now or never.

As soon as the fireworks were over, I took a deep breath and said

“Hikari-san, um, ………”

“I’ve been in love with you since the day we first met. Please go out with me.”

I gave it everything I had. I don’t care if you reject me.

The people around me who were watching applauded.

What? What? I still couldn’t believe it.

“Are you sure?

“Because I like you too, Kouki-kun.”

My face was burning hot and bright red.

“Kouki. Congratulations!”

Kengo hugged me.

“Thank you.”

We’ve become a great couple.

Then, Hikari said.

“Wish. It’s already come true..”, Hikari said.

“What was it?”

“I wished that I could go out with you, Kouki.”

Maybe we’re meant to be.

That’s what I thought.

“What did you get?”

“It’s a secret.”

“Tell me!”

There were countless stars shining in the sky.
