“So it’s like that.”
After Lowell-sama’s brother went home, I heard a simple explanation from my master.
Well, as I don’t have magic myself, I still feel I can’t fully understand what he told me.
“So, Lowell-sama has been providing his magic all this time?”
I said that while trying a boiled asparagus. Yup! Not too salty, today’s dish is a great success.
“Yes. It might look like it’s just a small amount of blood but, every time I end up really dizzy. It’s a bit troublesome… Hm? Ah, this is really good!”
After eating a bit of the fish soup, Lowell-sama’s face turned into that of a smile.
I also started smiling after seeing his expression. It might be something simple but still, it made me glad.
“I’m glad it was up to your taste!… But, as Master had his blood extracted, it might have been better if I had made something liver-based today… maybe?”
After that, I decided tomorrow’s dish is going to be something with meat.
Then, Lowell-sama answered me “Anything is good. I just love whatever Franelle cooks.”
The person in front of me looked like a smiley and happy young child.
He, My master, really is cute…
This was the first day that he asked me to eat together with him.
“I’m sorry brother”
In master Lowell-sama’s room, while placing the dishes on a small round table, that was the first thing that came out of his mouth.
And then, he told me all about his relationship with his brother.
Just after his older brother, the owner of the residence, went out of the house. When I met him at first, I really thought he was my master’s doppelganger, as he also had a beautiful face and such lustrous dark hair. But if one were to look closely, it was easy to spot the subtle differences between them.
“I am two years younger than my older brother, and before I became this, we used to play a lot together…. But…”
Just as he became ill, he told me he was moved to this old mansion.
“But, Medicine is evolving every day, so I’m sure someday, Someday, Lowell-sama will be able to see again!”
“You think so?”
“Yes! Yes, I do!”
After saying that with all the confidence I had, he answered with an “I hope so” as he closed his eyes. “I want to see Frannell’s face.”
“Eeh?!” my chest got tighter.
“If, if you are okay with my face, no matter how many times, you can look at it.”
Our everyday lives continued normally.
While taking care of Lowell-sama, I also started to put in order the old mansion a bit at a time. Difficulties appeared while doing so, a lot of them….
Re-opening the dusty library and enjoying the night time reading some books to Lowell-sama while he was listening at my side.
Planting beautiful flowers in the garden that was full of weeds. And leading Lowell-sama by the hand, walking all around it.
“It smells great” is what Lowell-sama said while revealing a beautiful smile.
I really felt that these little moments paid off all my efforts.
And as always, I continued to pay off my debt, and while I still had my record of failures, to this 16-year-old me this was the peak of my life.
It would be great if our days continued just like that.
I stretched both my hands at the sun as if I could reach it.
I continued every day without realizing how our future would change next as if all of Lowell-sama’s luck had been accumulating until now.
This happened just as my first half-year had passed at Lowell-sama’s side.
The older brother that only came once a month, that day, behind him were a number of other people that came together. Starting with Lowell-sama’s older brother, everyone that came had a serious expression.
“Did something happen?”
The sounds of a lot of steps being taken, without caring about my master’s permission entered the house.
“Don’t leave my side.”
Then, listening to the group of people I went to greet the guests.
Before I could finish pouring tea for everyone in the room, Lowell-sama’s older brother broke the silence.
“I have good news, Your Eyes can be healed.”
My hand that had the kettle began to tremble.
After hearing something I couldn’t believe, I instinctively turned around to look at my master’s older brother. He looked at me for a moment, made an expression as if he were looking at someone not of importance.
“My eyes will?”
Lowell-sama urged his brother to continue and his brother’s gaze removed from me.
Then a man with a balding head seated next to his brother said.
“Yeah, they can be cured. A recent magic procedure has been established. But I must express that because of the large amounts of magic needed the treatment certainly would be expensive.”
“It’s for my little brother. I won’t spare.”
The older brother affirms without a second for doubt.
If he cared that much about his Little brother, he could’ve made sure that this old mansion be cleaned a bit…. I had thought that while pouring tea to all the members. In fact, my heart was just getting filled with even more doubt.
However, to any other spectators, the older brother may have looked like a gentle caring older brother.
“I really have a great brother.”
A man who seems to have an authority in magical medicine nods slowly.
“This is for sure an article that would appear on the first page of the diary.”
“I’m sure about it. I’m looking forward to it.”
They chatted freely for a bit and established that surgery would partake in a week, then left the mansion.
“It’s great news.”
I said while withdrawing the cups of tea I served.
“Yes… I am glad but I can’t help thinking it’s unreal” said my master while seated at the chair in the middle of where the guests had been present.
“That’s true If I was told something like that so suddenly… It’s certainly hard to believe…”
But, If it is something said by My master’s older brother it can only be good news.
If Lowel-sama’s eyes would be healed, it would certainly be something to rejoice.
He would be able to walk by himself, read the books he likes anytime he wants.
All by himself, even if I am not there….
“That’s true, If my master is going to move back to the main house next week, there are a lot of things I need to prepare before that.”
“I am really glad! From the bottom of my heart!” Is what I said. While what I said was true I was also trying to hide the feeling of loneliness that started to fill my chest…
I just wanted to be needed.
When everyone went to sleep.
The polished mirror reflected the silhouettes of a beautiful Young man and an ugly girl.
A reddish color, significant of an old wound, was well visible on the girl’s skin.
But the Young man that lost his light can’t notice it.
The girl tried her best and said with a happy tone, “It’s finally tomorrow!”
Tomorrow, The Young man will regain his light, and at last, will be able to notice the real appearance of the girl.
“Yes… It’s a little bit scary….”
While saying that, the Young man searched for the girl’s hand.
“Could you hold my hand?”
“Yes” Of course, she said while smiling
The young man holds the little hand of the girl. The hand of a girl who just finished working with water, it felt cold. The man wanted to warm it up so he put pressure in his grip while holding hers.
“At last I would be able to see your face”
Did she not hear? It’s what the man thought when he couldn’t hear a reply from her.
But it wasn’t like that.
It wasn’t that she didn’t hear him, it was that she was crying so much that she couldn’t muster an answer for the young man.
It was just that…
