My Blind Master chapter 2

The Mouth is The Cause of Calamity

I’ve always been clumsier than any other people.

Breaking dishes, being forgetful, dropping the bed sheets that had just been washed… In other words, I’m a good-for-nothing maid.

And that has always irritated others and in the end I would be fired – repeatedly.

I wasn’t able to work long in the previous mansion, and the one before it because I was fired.

This is why I wanted this job to last longer.

No matter how hard the work would be.

ーWhat should I do…

Only a few hours have passed since I was hired.

And I was already in trouble as I stood in front of Lowell-sama’s room.

After I sent Trill-san off and somehow found a way to use the disordered kitchen, I prepared a simple dinner. (Seemingly, the servants would send in the ingredients two or three times per week).

Due to lack of time, I just made vegetable soup and grilled the meat, and put them on a tray with heated bread and water. I went up to the second floor where Lowell-sama’s room was.

I stopped at the entrance, relieved I didn’t spill anything on the way here.

Thusー I’ve found myself in a delicate situation

ーCrap! How am I supposed to open the door?

People would tell you it will be fine if you just use one hand to carry the tray. But I was not skilled enough with my hands to do it. I cannot do it. If I could, I wouldn’t be here.

I want to knock but both of my hands are occupied right now.

In the first place, it’s too rude to tell Lowell-sama to come out himself.

Being unable to knock due to my busy hands, I thought of asking Lowell-sama himself to open the door but it’s a very rude thing to ask your master.

Well, if worst comes to worst, I’ll just place the tray on the floor and open the door myself, right? But I don’t know why at that moment, I, who is usually driven by a sense of responsibility, thought:

“I need to serve him as quickly as possible before the meal gets cold.”

Before I could even realize, I had already spoken out:

“Lowell-sama. Err, I’ve made a meal for you but my hands are occupied right now… May you please open the door for me?

Silence.

The only thing I could do was wait.

ー… If he’s a considerate person, he should be able to understand me, right?

That’s right. I’ve made a blunder.

That’s right! The slow-witted me realized the blunder I’ve made only after a couple of seconds because of all the crashing sounds coming from inside.

Crash! Crash!

A sound of something heavy falling was heard, startling me. I raised my voice.

“Lowell-sama!?”

Then, it hit me.

“…!! Ahhhhh! I’m sorry, I’m sorry!! That’s right, your eyes couldn’t see…!! I’m really sorry!!”

Right now, the food was the least of my worries..

I placed down the tray on the floor, and quickly went inside the room.

“…Are you okay!?”

“Ye…Yes.”

As expected, Lowell-sama was laying down at the corner of his room. The plaster figure that he probably bumped into, was knocked over by his side. Who thought of placing something like this in here?

“I’m really sorry! I…umm…forgot about the matter about your eyes…”

“It’s okay. I’m used to it.”

As his hands were touching the floor and the wall, he raised his head showing his consideration towards me.

Ehhh! What’s up with this person? He is so kind. If it was my previous master, I would get yelled at first then fired.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry…! Ah, please hold onto me!”

I took Lowell-sama’s arm, who kept touching the dust-filled floor and wall. I’ll have to clean the room later.

“Please put your hand on my shoulder. I’m going to stand up, okay.”

“…Thank you.”

“No, no, no! This happened because I said something ridiculous!”

As I shouted that out, Lowell-sama stood up. He was taller than I thought, now it was completely unnecessary for him to put his arm over my shoulders.

I made Lowell-sama sit on the chair near the window.

“Umm, did you injure yourself? Does it hurt anywhere?”

“I’m fine. I may look like this, but my body is tough.” Lowell-sama said, smiling.

His eyes, which the same color as his hair, seemed entranced and unfocused. But, they were the kindest eyes I’ve ever seen.

I felt so sorry that I bowed countless times to Lowell-sama.

“I…erm…I’ve always been slow-witted. When I’m focused on one thing, I forget the other. Forgive me if I made you feel irritated. If anything happens, please don’t hesitate to speak out.”

“I see… Then, could I have my meal now?” He said, giving me a wry smile.

His words reminded me of the food I left in the hallway.

“I’m really sorry.”

“It’s fine. However, this is the first time someone ever asked me to open the door. It feels refreshing”

“…I’m sorry.”

Lowell-sama’s wry smile lingered on his face as he forgave me, as I bowed my head down.

As I feel like running away, I placed the tray on Lowell-sama’s table as he instructed. The chair by the window and the small table beside it seemed to be Lowell-sama’s fixed place.

“Umm, I’ll help you with eating.”

“It’s fine. I can do it myself”

True to his words, he was skillful to eat by himself for someone who is blind. He would cut the bread in long thin strips as he brought them to his mouth, circled by his beard. He would slowly drink the soup in small portions. I had already cut the meat into pieces to be bite-sized before serving him. And he used his senses to pick up the fork and eat it.

As I stared at his fluid movements, I felt sincere admiration towards him.

“…That’s amazing. You really can’t see?”

If it was me, I would have already flipped the plate over.

His hands suddenly freezed in the air, as he looked up, his blind eyes searching for me.

“Eh? You’re still here?”

“I didn’t leave from the beginning” I told my surprised master. He put down his fork with still a slice of meat hanging on it and his lips, surrounded by his beard, began to move as he spoke:

“I will ring a bell after I’m done, so you’re free to leave.”

“But what if you burn your hand? Ah! Maybe do you prefer to have a meal alone? If you feel troubled, I can wait outside.”

“..I don’t feel troubled but… don’t you feel unpleasant?”

“Eh? Unpleasant?”

Feel unpleasant to wait?

If that’s what he meant, then I don’t feel unpleasant at all. To wait until her master is done with his meal is the duty of every servant. When the glass is empty, it ought to be filled by me. If the fork falls on the ground then I’m in charge of bringing a new one.

In response to my confusion, Lowell-sama’s entranced eyes look down. His long bangs slid down as well, hiding his expression.

“No…Umm.”

He stopped in the middle of his sentence as if it was difficult for him to say it out loud. He continued with a much calmer voice.

“The smell, doesn’t it bother you?”

“Eh.”

Ah… about that?

“Ah, Ahhh…! About the smell.”

Yes.

Well, yes, the smell did bother me but it wasn’t the time nor my place to say something like that.

I’m thinking of how to connect the words together as I tried to guess the meaning behind them, and I came up with a result much worse than I thought.

“No that’s…erm… you see. If you were to ask me whether I’m bothered or not…it’s a little bit…I would think perhaps you are in need of some ventilation. But…umm…otherwise, no, it isn’t that bad.”

I wonder.

I’ve tried to select the words that won’t make him feel angry and hurt him.

But his reaction wasn’t what I expected…

“You don’t need to force yourself, you know.”

His smile looks so delicate and troubled.

That was it, the result of my words.

I should have read more books.

If I were to say I didn’t force myself, it would be a lie, but… I also wanted him to know that I didn’t mind it too much…What should I do?

As I was thinking, trying to learn from my mistake, Lowell-sama smelled his shirt’s sleeve and winced.

“Actually, I ran out of perfume. I asked the maid who was here before to buy it, but she seems to have forgotten about it.”

“Is that so? I know the brand you use, I could go buy it for you.”

“Really? Then, can I ask you to do that? I also hate the smell.”

Even you hate it, huh?… Well, it’s not surprising.

I clenched my fist with determination and said:

“Tomorrow, I will immediately go buy it!”

“Thank you. Until then, you can stay far from me.”

“…!!”

I became speechless as I felt touched by his words.

This person… How much more does he intend to be so kind?

No employer has ever cared about me this much before.

When I thought back of all the times when I was treated as a slowpoke and a dull-witted person, right now, Lowell-sama seemed like an angel to me. Ahh, I see… perhaps he is a reincarnation of an angel or a similar kind being. I…want to help such an angel…Lowell-sama.

“That’s right” I thought.

“Umm, Lowell-sama, if it is okay with you, shall I wipe your body for you?”

“Eh?”

“If I wiped your body with hot water, you will feel refreshed. Ah, perhaps do you prefer bathing?”

“But…”

“Please don’t be reserved! I might not look like it, but I’m quite strong.”

“Umm…but you are a girl.”

“Wait a minute” I said, standing up. Lowell-sama is mumbing, trying to find the words to refuse.

“Please do not mind, I’m used to it after all!”

“Eh? You are used to it?”

“Yes! Not only that but in the previous mansion I worked at, I also happened to wash a big dog!”

“Big dog…”

“Yes! I’m also good at shampooing!”

The enthusiastic me left Lowell-sama, to quickly boil water.

It’s only when I was carrying the hot water that I realized the rudeness in my remark.
